Our History

How did Lopez Fit come to be? When the previous Lopez gym, "Island Body and Fitness", announced they were closing, Heidi Strong, who'd been leading circuit classes, suggested opening a new small community gym. Many of her class members jumped at the idea and together they set about making it happen.

We found a vacant building (the former location of Paper Scissors on the Rock) and incorporated as a Washington non-profit. Heidi was hired as gym manager and Laura Adams, Mark and Kim Herrenkohl, Pamela McCabe, Beth Shirk, and Lexi and Kirm Taylor formed the governing board. After painting and repairing and organizing our new space we were ready for gym equipment that was generously donated by Aaron Dye from the old gym.

On two Saturdays in late December an enthusiastic group of community members pitched in with their time and muscle and trucks to move the equipment. Then, on Saturday, January 3, 2015, we proudly hung our "Open" sign" and celebrated with a community open house.

From the beginning our goal was a "gym for all" available to the whole community. Through a generous grant in partnership with the Lopez Island Family Resource Center, we are able to offer discounted memberships to those who ask. To manage our costs we have only two part time staff (Heidi Strong and White Bear) and the rest of the time our front desk is staffed by volunteers. Truly, a gym for all, by many!
